The castle Fridau was first mentioned in 1299 and was rebuilt during the reign of Maria Theresa in 1753 in the current Late Baroque style. Within the Prunksaal lies a beautiful ceiling painting by Daniel Gran. The castle served during the Turkish siege as a retreat for the community which consequently was successful in prevailing against the Turks. Only under the reign of Napoleon was the building captured and plundered. In 1750 a chemical factory was established within the castle and the adjoining outbuildings. During World War II it served as a hospital and later as garrison headquarter during the Russian occupation. In 1975 the Province of Lower Austria bought the castle and planned to place the country’s galleries there. This plan, however was rejected and the building was then sold to a private party in 1999.
